Remember the Ladies

A Boston by Ellen Exclusive Walking Tour

Why I Created This Tour.

I created the Remember the Ladies tour because of the extraordinary woman pictured here. Mercy Otis Warren was a poet, playwright, and historian who used the power of words to ignite the American Revolution.

She was doing what Sam Adams was doing, but almost no one knows about her!

I have done extensive research on the women influencers from Boston or spent time in Boston during the formation of their important ideas and actions. This will be an interactive tour. I want to expose you to these women, and then together, we will reflect on their impact during their time and beyond into today - into our own lives.

These women were visionaries and trailblazers, and their thoughts and actions have influenced future generations. I want us to explore what impact they have had throughout time and place into our own lives.

About this Tour

We will walk the streets of Boston starting in front of the Chipotle at 283 Washington Street, at the corner of School Street in Downtown Boston. This is the site of the home of our first lady. As we take a stroll, we will delve into the lives of at least eighteen incredible women from the colonial era to today, whose names you may not have learned in History class but should know. We will see the historical sites significant to these women's lives, the formation of the United States of America, and society in general.

We will begin with a discussion on one of the most influential women in the fight for religious freedom, Anne Hutchinson.

We will then explore the life of slave Phillis Wheatley, why she should be a household name and her connection to the Old South Meetinghouse.

We will "meet" Mercy Otis Warren, her writings, and Abigail Adams at the Old State House.

We will explore Beacon Hill, Boston's most prestigious neighborhood, to discover the influences of three notable women in history: Margaret Fuller, Elizabeth Peabody, and Isabella Stewart Gardner. We will explore the life of social worker Amelia Earhart, before she became the legendary aviator.

We will then round out the tour by visiting the beloved and famous "Make Way for Ducklings" sculpture in the Boston Public Garden, and discuss its creator, the living sculptor and Newton, MA native Nancy Schön.

Other women discussed on this tour include Weetamoo, Bet aka Mumbett aka Elizabeth Freeman, Deborah Sampson Gannett aka Robert Shirtcliff, Lucy Stone, Louisa May Alcott, Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, Melnea Cass, Joanne Chang.
